NORTHERN AYMARA INDIAN CH,UTA COSTUME
MID 20th Century

WS048

An original Aymara woman,s jacket and heavy skirt used in dancing Ch,uta. Ch,uta dances originated in the 18th century in La Paz, Bolivia. The dance was first performed by Indians from the altiplano who arrived in La Paz and mimicked Spanish customs. By the 19th century, "milkmaid" jackets, elaborately decorated with tiny seed trade beads, were popular among women dancers. Beaded jackets are rarely worn in dances today. This outfit is complete with an original pleated skirt, commonly known as ch,ola pollera. Circa 1950s.   SOLD
